Every society has its heroes, the ones who have treaded a different path than all others. This breed is fuelled by imagination, bread on creativity and has a nose for everything out of the ordinary. When this is applied to the visual medium we see narrative and technical brilliance that is not aimed at commerce but with the desire to express ones thought without the limitations that the world lives in.
Short Films, Documentaries, Ad Films, Special Video's and the like comprises of an exciting, expressive, extremely creative, cost-effective and emotionally fulfilling medium in the worldwide phenomenon called cinema. Currently, it is like the game of Tennis in India – loved by many, yet undervalued, under promoted with lack of encouragement, capital and knowledge of potential as compared to the richer game of Cricket.
When it comes to the visual medium of short films we have our own heroes who have come into reckoning with sheer substance and brilliance that money cannot buy. You could call them the torchbearers, initiators, creators or what you may, we call them the ‘Young Turks'. Like the sensational Sania Mirza in Tennis, Ashvin Kumar's short film ‘Little Terrorist' made it to the red carpet at the Oscars and numerous other festivals around the world, acting as a catalyst to the World taking note of the creative / commercial potential of the Short Film genre in India.
Taking a cue, a lot of upcoming filmmakers are getting ready to exploit the short film genre with a lot of passion, zeal and enthusiasm. ‘Short Cuts' saluted such people with a special set of screening dedicated to them. The ‘Young Turks' Umesh Kulkarni, Suhail Bukhari and Mohan Indraganti have expressed their creativity in their Award Winning Films and they all look like putting India on the new horizons in International cinema and carved a niche with accolades and honors that others only dream off.
‘Short Cuts' in its sixth edition of the monthly mini-festival screenings brought a collection of award winning and critically acclaimed short films ‘Girni' by Umesh Kulkarni, ‘Zarina' by Suhail Bukhari & Piyush Pushpak, ‘Chali' by Mohan Indraganti on Sunday, September 18th 2005, 6:30pm at Prasad Lab's Preview Theatre.
